  Lot 27

1967 Ford Mustang 289 Convertible
Former show-winner accompanied by an extensive history file and collection of nine trophies

Registration - XBL 207E

Chassis No. - 7R03C184642

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 51,000

Now here’s a visual feast for muscle car fans – a splendidly-presented Mustang convertible finished in Candy Apple Red. According to its very comprehensive history file, it had just three Stateside keepers before being imported from Kansas City by the vendor in 1993. The paperwork includes a letter from the previous keeper detailing the comprehensive restoration he had carried out, and it’s fair to say the Ford still looks good to this day. Its eye-catching paintwork is complemented by a black hood, black interior trim and a set of shiny chrome wheel trims. The vendor presently classifies the V8 engine, three-speed automatic transmission and convertible bodywork as ‘excellent’ and the paintwork and upholstery as ‘good to excellent’. Back in 2017 the car was treated to new spark plugs, rotor arm, points, distributor cap and upper ball joints, following which it was issued with an advisory-free MOT, since when it has driven less than 1,000 miles. This lovely specimen is now being sold complete with push-button radio, dust cover, Mustang branded jacket, box of trophies, original headlights, new spare wheel, jack, US certificate of title, V5C, 1993 purchase invoice, service history, current owner’s club valuation, and every old MOT.

The first generation Mustang was the first of the so-called ‘pony’ cars that subsequently included the Chevy Camaro, AMC Javelin and revamped Chrysler Barracuda. It was styled in house under the direction of Joe Oros and utilised as many components as possible from the existing Falcon and Fairlane models. Soon available in coupe, convertible and fastback guise, it could be bought with a range of straight-six and V8 engines. The sales forecast for year one was c.100,000 units - a figure that was surpassed in the first three months!

In summary:

  • A splendidly-presented lefthand drive example
  • Comes complete with extensive history and related ephemera
  • Imported to the UK from Kansas in 1993
