Spring 2021 Classics & Collectables Auction

  Lot 27

1973 Kawasaki Z1

Chassis No. - Z1F16915

Registration - SCW 504L

There are motorcycles and iconic motorcycles and the mighty Z1 definitely belongs in the latter camp. This concours-winning example has covered just 124 miles since being treated to a no expense spared restoration to UK specification. ‘SCW 504L’ originated in the sunny clime of California and apparently came to the UK courtesy of one of the country’s most respected Z1 gurus. It has benefited from the panels and tank being resprayed in the original eye-catching livery of candy green and yellow and the rechroming of its brightwork, while the machine’s on-road performance has been upgraded courtesy of Z-Power exhausts and conversion to a twin disc brake set-up. The vendor says it’s the best Z1 he’s encountered and believes it’s probably the finest currently on the market – apparently it was sold last year by The Bike Specialist for the princely sum of £26,980, since when further amounts have been invested in raising it to its current condition. This highly desirable Kawasaki is now available complete with its original handbook, service book, tool kit and photos of the rebuild.

At its launch in 1972, Kawasaki’s Z1 was the most powerful Japanese four-cylinder 4-stroke motorcycle to date. Mounted across the frame, its air-cooled 903cc DOHC engine produced 81bhp – sufficient to endow the bike with rocket-like acceleration and a top speed of 130mph-plus. Its ongoing popularity can be gauged by the fact it was voted ‘Machine of the Year’ by the readers of the enthusiast publication Motorcycle News every year from 1973 to 1976. By the time production of the model ceased in 1976 some 85,000 examples had found homes around the world.

In summary:

  • Perhaps the best Z1 currently available for sale in the UK
  • Just 14 miles completed since no expense spared restoration
  • Resplendent in its original livery of candy green and yellow
