March 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 28

1984 Ford XR4i
24V Cosworth V6 Engine Conversion *** NO RESERVE ***

Registration - B53 XCK

Chassis No. - WFOBXXGBBBE5421717

M.O.T. - TBC

Odometer - 26,160

Here’s an interesting proposition, for two reasons. Firstly, the XR4i is now an exceedingly rare model, with one source suggesting this is one of only seven examples currently licensed for UK roads. Secondly, in place of its original 2.8-litre Cologne V6 engine lies a late specification (BOB) 2.9—litre V6 Cosworth unit, as fitted to the last of the Granada Scorpios, that’s been further enhanced courtesy of a Megasquirt engine management system. No output figure has been quoted, but it should be in excess of 207bhp compared with the 148bhp of a standard XR4i. And there’s more, as other upgrades include Sierra Cosworth rear suspension, larger front brake discs, adjustable Koni dampers, larger wheels and tyres and a tow bar. Finished in white and trimmed in grey fabric, ‘B53 XCK’ is therefore something of a wolf in sheep’s clothing. It has been in the vendor’s possession for no less than 20 years, while the Cosworth conversion was apparently made some 8/9 years ago. He now classes the engine and five-speed manual transmission as ‘good’ and the three-door bodywork, paintwork and upholstery as ‘average’ for the car’s age. He adds that this unique Ford has been used regularly and is ‘comfortable, quick and very reliable’. The car is being offered complete with its original Ford radio/cassette and sunroof, and the winning bidder will have the opportunity to buy a range of spares by separate negotiation, including: the original engine, related fuel injection system and water pump, plus two new XR4i tyres, rear exhaust box, and seven RS wheels and tyres. The car’s odometer currently displays just 26,160km, a figure that appears to be supported by its MOT history.

Released in the September of 1982, the Ford Sierra was a replacement for the ubiquitous Cortina, and proved to be another success story with sales reaching 1,299,993 units over the 11 years of production. Always quick to support the performance and motorsport markets, the company introduced the be-winged XR4i version in 1983, which was followed by the XR4x4 in 1985.

In summary:

• A now very rare performance version of the Ford Sierra

• Equipped with Cosworth BOB engine and other upgrades

• Currently registering just 26,160km from new
