The Bolesworth Castle November 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 28

1996 Mazda RX7 FD Efini
***NO RESERVE*** UK registered since 2006 and powered by a highly modified (c400bhp) engine

Registration- N870 JHK

Chassis No - FD35402714

M.O.T. - February 2024

Odometer - 66,000 miles

‘N870 JHK’ is a 1996 FD model that was imported to the UK in 2006. Unlike many such examples it retains its standard body parts. The interior is also to factory specification aside of an extended gearlever – a process that could easily be reversed. The power unit on the other hand is anything but stock. It was rebuilt less than 10,000 miles ago by Re-worx Ltd of Portsmouth, who converted the 13 REW unit to run on a single turbo with a street port. The resulting output is apparently close to 400bhp and there’s a dyno printout to prove it. The gearbox has also been overhauled – work that subsequently passed an inspection by U8 Performance of Perth. The long list of modifications made to the Mazda include: Blitz NUR exhaust and electronic boost controller; HKS F-CON V Pro ECU; HKS turbo timer; 2 Way limited slip differential with solid mounts; stiffened gearbox mounts; battery relocated to the boot; adjustable BC coilovers; strut brace; rare works S2R 18” alloy wheels; Defi instrument controller and oil temperature gauge; OEM MOMO steering wheel; Kenwood stereo; immobiliser/alarm. The vendor informs us that the RX7 was treated to a repaint in PZ black as recently as this February, and says the car is rust free – it was also serviced just one month ago. Overall he presently classes the Wankel engine, bodywork and paintwork as ‘excellent’, the five-speed manual gearbox as ‘good’, and the upholstery as ‘average’ – eg there is split in the rear seat. The car is now being sold due to the imminent birth of a new baby, and comes complete with a ‘meticulous’ history including invoices, a full and comprehensive service record, and MOTs dating back to 2006, plus a current certificate valid into February next year.

The third (FD) and final incarnation of the RX7 was launched in 1992. It featured an updated body design of softer lines, but the key point of note was its engine’s sequential twin-turbocharger system that was developed in conjunction with Hitachi. This raised the output of the twin rotor powerplant to a very respectable 255bhp. However, such a figure is far from sufficient for the many Mazda enthusiasts looking to optimise the performance of their cars, and one of a number of popular solutions is to replace the factory’s twin turbo set-up with a single one of choice.

In summary:

  • A 1996 FD example imported to the UK in 2006
  • The subject of a much modified engine that now outputs c.400bhp
  • Comes with meticulous history file, full service record and MOT
