The Bolesworth Castle March 2024 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 28

2002 Audi S3
A rare, 326hp MTM stage 3 ‘big turbo’ conversion of Audi’s S3 quattro

Registration - S321 MTM

Chassis No. - WAU2228LO31204535

M.O.T. - November 224

Odometer - 89.333

This is a rare and very collectable wolf in sheep’s clothing. Things start to heat up when you notice the S3 badging and the leather Recaro front seats and realise that this Audi hatchback is a quattro, and one which, when new, was blessed with a potent 225hp from its 1.8-litre turbo engine. Then you spot the MTM badge – nicely echoed in the cherished registration ‘S321 MTM’ - and things become yet more interesting. Because this car is one of a handful which received a stage 3 Motoren Technik Mayer (MTM) upgrade, making it something very special indeed. In 2005, the car’s then-owner spent £7,500 treating their three-year-old S3 to a stage 3 MTM/QST upgrade to 326hp from 225hp, including K26 turbo, MTM exhaust manifold, wastegate, down pipe, injectors and pipework with MTM remap and MTM clutch kit fitted. The transformation to a ‘big turbo’ model was carried out by QS Tuning in Sussex, MTM’s only UK agent, and the car’s history file carries the all-important documentation to confirm this. With just four owners from new, ‘S321 MTM’ has been well looked after throughout its life, as the full service history shows. In 2021 the car benefited from a full cylinder head overhaul, replacement of all valves and timing chain, and within the last five months it has received a full service and Haldex service, had all four alloy wheels refurbished and the brake callipers painted. The current owner gauges the engine and six-speed manual transmission to be ‘excellent’ and the car comes complete with original handbook and an MOT to 11 November 2024.

When Audi introduced the S3 in 1999 they took the hot hatch market in a new direction. The combination of a 1.8-litre turbo petrol engine producing 225hp and Audi’s renowned build quality and quattro all-wheel-drive system ensured that the S3 was a hit with hot hatch fans – but there was more to come. Tuners quickly appreciated the vehicle’s potential, and just how far the quattro system would allow them to push it. One of the most respected tuners was Germany’s MTM (Motoren Technik Mayer), who developed three levels of tuning for the S3 – mapped, hybrid and big turbo. And it is this final, most desirable stage of tune that the car on offer here boasts.

In summary:

  • A rare, 326hp MTM stage 3 ‘big turbo’ conversion of Audi’s S3 quattro
  • Extensive history file and full service history document all work done
  • A four-owner example, which has been cherished throughout its life
