  Lot 29

1941 Mercury Eight Coupe

Registration - KXS 478

Chassis No. - 379634

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 81,270

This delightfully original-looking lefthand drive coupe was imported from Savannah, Georgia by the current keeper in 2018 and first UK-registered in February the following year. It was the subject of an older restoration which the vendor feels ‘has stood up well and kept the car as original as possible’. He presently grades the V8 engine, three-speed manual transmission with column-change and black-piped grey cloth interior trim as all being in ‘good’ order, and the two-door coupe bodywork and black paintwork as ‘average’. ‘KVS 478’ is now being offered complete with winged bonnet mascot, internally adjustable pillar-mounted spotlights and US style number plates. Since coming to these shores it has been reserved for visiting shows and fine–day cruising. It would also make a perfect entry for many of today’s long-distance classic rallies.

Mercury was a middle price brand created by Ford in 1938 to bridge the gap between its Ford and Lincoln ranges. Its main competitors in the American domestic market were Oldsmobile, DeSoto, Hudson and Studebaker. The Mercury Eight was the debut line of the new division and manufactured from 1939 right through to 1951 in three different generations. It was in 1941 that it underwent its first redesign and, to consolidate development and production, the new Mercury version shared much of its bodyshell with the Ford Super DeLuxe, but featured a two-inch longer wheelbase and Mercury specific grille, exterior and interior trim and the tail lamps. The Eight was offered in a range of body styles - two-door coupe, convertible, and so-called Sportsman convertible and four-door saloon and estate. All were powered by the same 239ci (3.9-litre) flathead V8 engine.

In summary:

  • Imported from Savannah, Georgia in 2018
  • The subject of an older restoration
  • Recently treated to a service and brake overhaul
