November 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 3

1963 Morris Minor 1000 Two-Door Saloon
*** NO RESERVE ***

Registration - BPR 733A

Chassis No. - M/A2S5.D.1034569

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 96,728

According to Experian Autocheck, this venerable Minor has had just five UK keepers to date. However, the document also alludes to the car being temporarily exported in October 2008, though to where and for how long we do not know. What we can say is that it’s finished in dark blue that’s matched to a set of smart red carpets and red vinyl seats (apparently the driver’s chair is faulty, but will be replaced prior to the sale). The Morris, which currently displays a total mileage of 96,728, is now being offered at No Reserve together with a limited degree of history.

Morris’s Minor is almost as universal a symbol of England as the London bus and the red telephone box and, with over 1.6 million manufactured over a 23-year reign, is one of the most successful cars of all time. Designed by Alec Issigonis (who also penned the ubiquitous Mini), the Minor was unveiled at the 1948 Earls Court Motor Show and 13 years later became the first British car to achieve a million sales. It was intended to provide the luxuries and practicality of existing quality motorcars at a price suitable for the ordinary person – a laudable aim that that most enthusiasts would agree it achieved with aplomb. The biggest update in its lifetime occurred in 1956, when the engine was increased in capacity to 948cc (the car was now renamed the Minor 1000), the rear window enlarged and the split-screen front one replaced with a single glass. The final iteration appeared in 1962 and featured an increase in engine capacity to 1098cc, a stronger gearbox with baulk ring synchromesh and larger front brakes.

In summary:

  • A complete and usable example being sold at No Reserve
  • Paperwork shows five UK owners and 96,728 miles from new
  • Appears to have been temporarily exported in 2008
