The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia remains one of the most elegant sports coupés of the post-war era, combining timeless Italian styling by Carrozzeria Ghia with the proven reliability and simplicity of Volkswagen mechanicals. Built by Karmann in Germany, the model offered owners a more refined and sophisticated alternative to the Beetle while retaining the dependable engineering that made Volkswagen famous. Today, genuine UK-supplied right-hand drive examples are increasingly difficult to find, particularly those presented to such a high standard.
First registered in September 1963, this charming Karmann Ghia is an original UK-supplied, right-hand drive example finished in an attractive metallic grey complemented by a light grey interior. The vendor informs us they have owned the car for just over four years, having purchased it from a private collector through Car & Classic. During their ownership it has been enjoyed exclusively as a fair-weather classic, driven only between April and October and never intentionally used in wet weather.
Power comes from a lively 1,600cc air-cooled flat-four engine which the vendor advises performs exceptionally well. Opening the rear engine lid reveals a clean and well-presented engine bay, enhanced by a CB Performance air filter assembly and complemented by distinctive twin 'Cartune' tailpipes, giving the car a purposeful yet period-correct character. Maintenance during the current ownership has been entrusted to a respected Volkswagen classic specialist, ensuring the car has continued to be properly cared for.
The accompanying history file is extensive and includes previous invoices, receipts and photographs documenting restoration work carried out prior to the current ownership. While the exact dates of the restoration are not recorded, the photographic record clearly illustrates the car's evolution and the high standard to which it has been maintained over the years.
Externally, the Karmann Ghia presents beautifully with excellent bodywork, bright chrome trim and an attractive stance provided by desirable Flat 4 Fuchs-style alloy wheels, measuring 4.5 inches at the front and 5.5 inches at the rear. The elegant styling remains one of the model's defining features, and this example captures the timeless appeal for which the Karmann Ghia has become so highly regarded.
Inside, the cabin is equally impressive, retaining its simple and driver-focused layout with a well-presented light grey interior that perfectly complements the exterior finish. The luggage compartment is clean and tidy, complete with the hood cover and additional accessories, further demonstrating the care this car has received throughout its life.
Accompanied by an extensive history file, MOT until April 2027 and benefiting from careful enthusiast ownership, this highly attractive Karmann Ghia represents an excellent opportunity to acquire one of the finest examples of Volkswagen's iconic sporting coupé. Equally suited to classic touring, concours events or simply weekend enjoyment, it is a car that is becoming increasingly sought after by collectors worldwide.
