May 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 3

1994 Jaguar XJ40 3.2 Gold Edition
*** NO RESERVE ***

Registration - L8 RDB

Chassis No. - SAJJFALG3AJ703719

M.O.T. - Expired

Odometer - TBC

The vendor purchased ‘L8 RDB’ last year with the intention of fixing what’s thought to be a head gasket problem, but has been prevented from doing so by ill health. Apparently the car starts and runs perfectly smoothly and the temperature remains normal, but there is evidence of oil contamination in the coolant. The Jaguar has recently benefited from a new alternator and fan belt, is finished in blue matched with ‘excellent’ cream leather interior trim, and is now offered at ‘No Reserve’ complete with ‘an excellent set of tyres’, private registration, owner’s handbooks and a selection of old MOTs and invoices.

The all new XJ6 (or XJ40 to use its code name) was launched in October 1986 in replacement for Jaguar’s ageing Series III cars. It boasted all-round independent suspension, power-assisted rack and pinion steering, four-wheel disc brakes and generous levels of sound deadening. It proved to be a credible alternative to Mercedes-Benz’s S-Class and BMW’s 7-Series and was well received by the motoring press. The newcomer was initially available with a choice of two variants of the straight-six AJ6 powerplant - the 2.9-litre SOHC unit or the 3.6-litre DOHC engine. Allied to either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic 'J-gate' transmission, they allowed purchasers to prioritise performance over economy and vice-versa. By 1989, Jaguar had been bought by Ford who changed the engine offerings to a 3.2-litre DOHC unit or 4.0-litre DOHC one. The ‘Gold’ edition of the XJ40 was an attractively priced version offered in 1994. It was basically the standard car but with a limited set of features, options and choice of colours. Examples are identified by their ‘Kiwi’-style alloy wheels, gold boot and grille badges, and twin coachlines.

In summary:

  • Private plate ‘L8 RDB’ included in the sale
  • Being sold at ‘No Reserve’
