May 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 30

1977 MG Midget 1500
One owner, and just 4,000 miles from new

Registration - VUE 969S

Chassis No. - GAN6-198218G

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 4,557

This time warp Midget is definitely one for the collectors among you, having had just the one recorded keeper from new and travelled a mere 4,557 miles in 45 years! It was apparently supplied new in 1977 by Tipton Garages of Staffordshire, since when it has been ‘well maintained and regularly started’. Perhaps unsurprisingly the vendor currently regards the 1493cc four-cylinder engine, four-speed manual gearbox, two-seater bodywork, Sandglow paintwork and brown vinyl interior trim to all be in excellent condition, and he informs us that the baby two-seater runs ‘as sweet as a nut’. He is now offering it complete with the original logbook, supplier’s card and tax certificate, a letter verifying the mileage, plus all the car’s MOTs from 1981 to 1989 (at which point it was placed in storage); not to mention a spare wheel and tyre that have never seen the light of day. A truly unique opportunity.

By the time of the MKIII Midget of 1966, the engine’s capacity had increased from 948 via 1098 to 1275cc, semi-elliptic rear springs had replaced the quarter elliptics and the front brakes featured discs rather than drums. There were also wind-up windows and a superior hood. In 1972 a lower-geared Triumph steering rack was fitted, a second silencer added and the dynamo ousted in favour of an alternator. The final iteration, the MKIV, brought deformable bumpers allied to an increased ride height and a new engine and gearbox – the 1,493cc and four-speed manual units from the Triumph Spitfire. With 66bhp on tap, the model was now capable of a genuine 100mph. A total of 226,001 Midgets were built between 1961 and 1979.

In summary:

  • A time warp example with just one owner and 4,557 miles from new
  • Comes with original logbook and unused spare wheel and tyre
  • Mileage supported by an accompanying letter and MOTs
