November 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 30

1995 Ford Escort RS Cosworth LUX
Only 56,000 miles, finished in rare Petrol Blue

Registration - N529 VRM

Chassis No. - WFOBXXGKABSE96984

M.O.T. - July 2023

Odometer - 56,460

‘N529 VRM’ is finished in the rare colour of Petrol Blue that’s paired with black interior trim. The property of a deceased estate, it has at some stage been treated to a big turbo conversion and is now understood to be producing c.240bhp. The vendor currently considers the Cosworth engine, five-speed manual gearbox, two-door bodywork, paintwork and luxury interior trim to all be in ‘good’ condition. She is now selling the Cossie complete with Clifford alarm, DVD player accompanied by separate headphones, the car’s original service book, owner’s manual, history file and pair of keys, plus a current MOT certificate valid to July 9 next year. In total there have been six keepers to date, which have amassed a total of 56,460 miles between them.

Now a firm collectors’ favourite, the Escort RS Cosworth was created for Ford to contest the World Rally Championship, in which it competed between 1993 and 1998, winning eight events in Group A guise and two more in World Rally Car specification. There were three versions of the road going car – Motorsport, Standard and Lux (short for luxury). Early examples of the model were fitted with the oversized Garrett T34 turbocharger for homologation purposes, while those from late 1994 were equipped with the smaller T25 unit, which made for easier driving on the public roads. There was relatively little difference in outright performance, however, which, with some 224bhp on tap, equated to a 0-60mph time of around 5.5 seconds and a top speed just shy of 150mph. Including the 2,500 required for homologation, a total of 7,145 examples were built over the four years of production, making it a relatively rare model with enviable back story.

In summary:

  • A Lux version finished in the rare colour of Petrol Blue
  • Features a big turbo conversion and power increase to c.240bhp
  • A relatively modest six keepers and 56,460 miles from new
