  Lot 31

1958 Jaguar XK150 Drop Head Coupe

Registration - VGU 496

Chassis No. - S827156DN

M.O.T. - January 2023

Odometer - Total mileage 174,047, but odometer reads 25,036

This delightful matching numbers Drop Head Coupe is one of no less than three XK150s in this sale. It has had just three owners in its 64-year life (two since 1961) and remained the treasured possession of the current keeper for 22 of them. He informs us that ‘no expense has been spared in bringing the car back to its current condition’ and says ‘the engine pulls well and with good oil pressure and no cooling issues, while the gearbox is sweet and the overdrive works well’. ‘VGU 496’ has evidently benefited from a substantial degree of maintenance over the last 18,500 miles, during which the painted wire wheels, Pirelli Cinturato tyres, hubs, wheel bearings, brake discs, master and wheel cylinders, upper wishbone bushes and wiring harness have all be renewed and the steering rack refurbished. Equal attention has been paid to the interior, which has seen the seats and original steering wheel refurbished and the carpets, door cards, hood and headlining replaced by Jaguar specialist coach-trimmers Suffolk & Turley. Finished in Mist Grey and trimmed in pale blue hide, the Jaguar has apparently amassed a total of 174,047 miles to date, though a change of speedometer along the way means it only currently displays 25,036. Following a routine service, the car is now being offered for sale complete with a comprehensive history file dating back to 1962, plus a current MOT valid until January 27 next year.

Subtle changes to the XK140 endowed its successor with a more modern air. The split windscreen was replaced with a single sweep of toughened glass, the scuttle height raised, the bonnet widened and the dashboard trimmed in leather rather than walnut. A total of 4,445 XK150 Fixed Head Coupes were ultimately produced.

In summary:

  • A very original, matching numbers example
  • Just three owners from new
  • The beneficiary of considerable ongoing maintenance and a recent service
