November 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 31

1991 Tempest Vantique

Registration - H255 PUK

Chassis No. - 170199KG000611

M.O.T. - November 2023

Odometer - 60,426

The Reliant Kitten-based Vantique on offer was first registered in July 1991 and is believed to have had just five owners to date – prior to a recent period in Wales it had spent a number of years in Northern Ireland. As offered, it features a black roof over an unadorned cream body and red wings, but would clearly make an ideal promotional vehicle for, say, a local trades company – the type of role ‘H255 PUK’ has apparently fulfilled in the past. We understand it has seen little activity in the last four years, but been dry stored when not in use – the total indicated mileage currently stands at 60,426. The vendor presently classes the four-cylinder engine, four-speed manual transmission, van body, paintwork and black interior trim as all being in ‘good’ order, and is now selling the ultra-rare commercial vehicle complete with a fresh MOT, plus an assortment of old certificates and other paperwork.

The first Tempest-branded vehicle was the 850 two-seater. Designed by John Box it, featured a tubular steel bodyshell clothed in alloy or fibreglass panels. The chassis and running gear were obtained from donor Reliant Fox or Kitten models. These little cars proved handy in the world of production car trials. Having created one Reliant-based vehicle that found favour with a certain brand of enthusiast driver, Box then turned his attention to designing a commercial vehicle. Christened the Vantique it again relied on either Fox or kitten mechanicals which were clothed in a 1930’s-esque van body. The first of just 11 ultimately constructed reached the road in late 1989, with the last appearing ten years later – four were based on Fox chassis and five on Kitten ones. All are believed to have been powered by the Reliant all-alloy 848cc petrol engine of 40bhp.

In summary:

  • A delightful alternative to the characterless vans of today
  • An ideal mobile advertisement for a small business
  • A well-presented example of only 11 Vantiques made
