1926 Humber 9/20 Four-Seat Tourer

Those looking to treat the family to some genuine vintage motoring need look no further than this nicely-presented 1926 Humber. Finished in cream over black and trimmed in dark tan leather, it is offered complete with a full set of weather gear comprising hood, hood cover, side screens and tonneau. The specification also includes a secondary wood-framed cowl to prevent the buffeting of rear seat passengers when the hood is down. Other items typical of the period include a running board-mounted fuel can, klaxon and Calormeter temperature gauge. The Humber’s 1056cc inlet-over-exhaust four-cylinder engine features an aluminium cylinder block, Dynastart combined starter and dynamo, and magneto ignition. Following just five previous owners, the 9/20 was acquired by the vendor back in 1993, so it is after no leass than 28 years that he is now offering the car for sale complete with a large quantity of spares that includes a second engine, gearbox casing and four new tyres.
In common with many now defunct or dormant British car marques, Humber started life as a bicycle manufacturer and was founded by one Thomas Humber in 1868. The company rapidly expanded until it was producing unpowered two-wheelers at Nottingham, Beeston and Wolverhampton. By the time a fourth plant was established in Coventry, the firm was becoming increasingly attracted to powered transport, producing its first conventional motorcar in 1899. And, while it’s now hard to imagine, by 1913 Humber had evolved into the UK’s second largest motor manufacturer. Made from 1925 to 1928, the 9/20 was something of a big car in miniature – beautifully made and trimmed and generously equipped by the standards of the day.
