November 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 32

1952 Fiat Belvedere
*** NO RESERVE *** One of only 60 RHD examples built

Registration - MXS 423

Chassis No. - 355887

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 61,850 km

This delightful Belvedere is understood to be one of just 60 built in righthand drive form. It was evidently restored and resprayed in its current blue and white livery by the previous owner, and then acquired by the vendor some three years ago. Largely due to COVID he has added barely 100 miles to the car’s indicated total, which currently stands at just 61,850 kilometres (38,432 miles). He presently considers the three-door bodywork and paintwork to be in ‘excellent’ condition and the four-cylinder engine, four-speed manual transmission and brown vinyl interior to all be in ‘good’ order. He says the little Fiat has been garaged throughout his tenure and ‘starts, runs and stops as it should’, but notes that ‘the rear lights are currently not functioning’. He is now selling ‘MXS 423’ complete with two sets of keys and its original jack.

When launched in 1936, the original Fiat 500 (commonly known as the Topolino – Little Mouse) was one of the smallest cars in the world, and defined by Mussolini as the ‘work and savings car’. There were three consecutive versions, logically christened A, B and C, the last of which was introduced in 1949 and featured a heavily restyled body. This was offered in four guises - two-door saloon, convertible, van and a three-door estate dubbed the Giardiniera (Gardener). However, in 1952 this version was rechristened Belvedere, a moniker inspired by its generously-sized flip-back sunroof. Power for the 500A came from a side-valve engine of 569cc and modest 13bhp output, while 500B and C models benefited from an OHV powerplant of the same capacity but 16.5bhp. Production of the 500 continued until 1955, by when some 520,207 examples had been made.

In summary:

  • One of only 60 righthand drive Belvederes built
  • Restored and resprayed by the previous keeper
  • Just 100 miles in last three years and 38,432 from new
