The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 32

1963 Triumph TR4
*** NO RESERVE ***

Registration - APR 839A

Chassis No. - CT281620

M.O.T. - N/A

Odometer - TBC

‘APR 839A’ has had a total of seven owners since it was first registered in December 1963, the most recent of whom has retained the TR for no less than 19 years. Originally blue, it was resprayed red in 1985, a livery that contrasts perfectly with the white-piped black upholstery. The vendor informs us that the car is ‘mechanically very good’ and presently classes its four-cylinder engine, four-speed transmission, two-seater bodywork and electrical system as ‘good’, and the paintwork and interior trim as ‘average’. We understand this venerable Triumph has been recently treated to new rear springs and that its silver-painted wire wheels are shod with ‘newish’ tyres. It is now being offered for sale complete with woodrim steering wheel and tonneau cover.

Code named ‘Zest’, the TR4 was introduced in 1961 as a replacement for the TR3A. Though based on the chassis and drivetrain of its much-loved predecessor it cut a far more modern dash, thanks to an all new eye-catching body penned by the Italian stylist Giovanni Michelotti, who had previously styled the company’s popular Herald model. Power was provided by Triumph’s proven OHV four-cylinder engine, the capacity of which was, however, increased to 2,138 cc. Other mechanical updates included a wider track front and rear, rack and pinion steering and an all-synchromesh gearbox. A total of 40,253 TR4s were manufactured between 1961 and January 1965, at which point the model evolved into the TR4A, courtesy of independent rear suspension. TR4s competed successfully in racing and rallying in period and the model remains a force to be reckoned with, and is therefore sought after for use in historic events today.

In summary:

  • Said by the vendor to be ‘mechanically very good’
  • Remained within the current ownership for the last 19 years
  • Benefits from new rear springs and ‘newish’ tyres
