March 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 32

1987 Ford Escort RS Turbo S2
*** NO RESERVE ***

Registration - E349 JJN

Chassis No. - WF0BXXGCABHL62549

M.O.T. - July 2023

Odometer - 31,190

For a model nearing its 40th birthday, Ford’s RS Turbo still looks the part. The example on offer was first registered in August 1987 but is understood to be a 1988 model year car that has subsequently been further updated to 1990 specification. It also benefits from a number of uprates including: an EFI conversion, GRS big intercooler, Samco hoses, rear disc brake conversion and 17inch ‘soft line’ alloy wheels shod in Nexen tyres, and is accompanied by a dyno test sheet confirming an engine output of 205bhp and 194 lb ft of torque. It is finished in the pleasing combination of Mercury Grey bodywork and grey cloth interior trim. According to VDI Check, ‘E349 JJN’ has had 15 keepers to date, the most recent of whom acquired the car in 2018, 19 years before which it was designated a Category D insurance write-off. Now very much alive and well, the RS is offered complete with sunroof, original Ford radio/cassette and a current MOT valid to July 28.

Debuted in October 1984, the MK3 Escort-based Series 1 RS Turbo went on sale the following spring. The initial plan was to build the 5,000 required for Group A homologation. However, following better than expected demand, a total of 8,604 were eventually created, 5,000 of which were reserved for the UK market. Power for the model came courtesy of a 1597cc version of the company’s CVH engine, force fed by a Garrett AiResearch T3 turbocharger. The resulting peak output was 132bhp at 6,000rpm – sufficient to achieve the 0-60mph sprint in 7.8 seconds and 128mph flat out. The MK4 Escort-based Series 2 RS Turbo appeared in 1986 and continued in manufacture until 1990. It was a series production model rather than a homologation special and therefore produced in a choice of colours (S1 cars were all white except for three special orders in black). Total production was c.22,108 units.

In summary:

  • A 1987 example updated to 1990 specification
  • Benefits from a range uprates – dynoed at 205bhp and 194 lb ft
  • Designated a CAT D write-off in 1999
