The Gold Cup – Classic, Performance & Supercar Auction

  Lot 32

1997 Honda Prelude 2.2 VTI
***NO RESERVE*** Desirable four-wheel steering, complete with its cherished registration

Registration – OIL 5003

Chassis No. – JHMBB81500C001078

M.O.T. – NO

Odometer – 93,000

The fifth and final generation Honda Prelude continued the model's reputation for combining sophisticated engineering with distinctive styling and engaging performance. Sitting towards the top of the range, the 2.2 VTi is particularly sought after for its high-revving VTEC engine, while this example is further distinguished by Honda's innovative four-wheel-steering system.

First registered on 16 April 1997, ‘OIL 5003’ was reportedly supplied new for £21,880. Its specification includes four-wheel steering, an electric glass sunroof and cruise control, while a period Kenwood audio system with automatic CD changer is also understood to be fitted.

The vendor acquired the Prelude on 3 April 2005 at approximately 79,500 miles and has therefore owned it for more than two decades. The accompanying history records that the camshaft timing belt was changed at 58,500 miles, while previous MOT certificates cover the period from 2004 to 2011.

The car has also been converted to run on LPG in addition to petrol, with the installation neatly incorporated and its associated controls discreetly positioned within the cabin.

Its last recorded maintenance included an engine oil and antifreeze change at approximately 93,550 miles. The odometer now displays some 93,600 miles, meaning it has covered only around 14,000 miles during the vendor's ownership.

Having been dry stored and SORN since 2011, the Prelude is now offered as a recommissioning project and does not currently hold an MOT. Prospective purchasers should therefore satisfy themselves as to the extent of work required before returning it to the road.

With fifth-generation Preludes becoming increasingly difficult to find, particularly in desirable 2.2 VTi four-wheel-steer specification, this long-term-owned example represents an interesting opportunity. Adding considerably to its individuality is the memorable cherished registration ‘OIL 5003’, which is included in the sale.

Offered entirely without reserve.

  • Desirable 2.2-litre VTi with four-wheel steering and electric sunroof
  • Long-term ownership, with the present keeper acquiring the car in 2005
