November 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 33

1954 Morris Minor Traveller
Desirable split screen

Registration - 241 YUR

Chassis No. - FLA11/295677

M.O.T. - September 2023

Odometer - 35,565

According to one source, only 821 Minor Travellers are currently licensed in the UK, a small percentage of which are split-screen Series II examples like the sale car, so its appearance on the market represents a rare opportunity. We understand that it was fully restored by the previous keeper and that it has also benefited from the fitment of a 1275cc engine that drives through a Ford Sierra five-speed manual gearbox, while the brakes have been upgraded with a servo. Apparently the Minor has been well-maintained over the last decade by the Lancashire Morris Minor Owners Club, and the vendor currently regards its A Series engine, black paintwork and red vinyl interior trim to be in ‘excellent’ order and classes the transmission and bodywork as ‘good’. Personal touches include an alloy rocker cover and pancake air filter, bespoke covers for the load area and spare wheel hatch, chrome GB plate and fishtail exhaust trim.

The Minor set out to provide the luxuries and practicality of existing quality motorcars at a price suitable for the ordinary person, and did. Two-door saloon and tourer versions of the model were unveiled in 1948. The four-door saloon followed in 1950 and the popular Traveller, van and pick-up variants completed the range two years later. The first iteration, the MM, was produced from 1948 to 1953. Power came from a 918cc straight-four, side-valve engine producing 27.5bhp. The Series II iteration of 1952 saw the model’s original side valve engine replaced by the new, Austin-designed, 803cc OHV A Series unit. Series II production ran for four years, during which 269,838 saloons, convertibles and Travellers were produced.

In summary:

  • A handsome example of a now rare breed
  • Upgraded with 1275cc engine, Sierra gearbox and brake booster
  • The subject of a previous restoration
