February 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 34

1939 Rolls-Royce Wraith Limousine by Park Ward

Registration - FXF 966

Chassis No. - WXA83

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 689

‘FYF 966’ is clothed in original, unrestored Park Ward limousine coachwork. The livery is apparently a combination of black and maroon, but, thanks to modern technology, the Rolls is currently wrapped in ivory and is therefore well suited for wedding duties – a role it has apparently been performing on a regular basis. The driver’s compartment is trimmed in black leather, while seating aft of the division is upholstered in light brown-coloured cloth – the back seat and a pair of occasional chairs provide ample accommodation for up to five adults to travel in style. Related luggage is catered for by a large rear mounted trunk. The vendor volunteers that the Wraith would now benefit from the removal of the wrapping and a respray in a colour of the next keeper’s choice, and currently grades the straight-six engine, four-speed manual transmission and interior trim as ‘good’, and the coachwork and paintwork as ‘average’. This apparently very original Rolls-Royce is now being sold complete with dual Klaxons, centre-mounted auxiliary driving light, wing mirrors, Spirit of Ecstasy radiator mascot and rare inspection lamp, plus flashing indicators in deference to the needs of modern traffic.

The Wraith was a short-lived model that replaced the 25/30 and was manufactured as a rolling chassis by Rolls-Royce at its Derby factory from 1938 to 1939. The chassis were clothed by independent coachbuilders to the taste of the customers. The word Wraith is Scottish for ghost and therefore perfectly complemented the company’s established naming policy. The model was powered by a straight-six engine of 4,257cc which drove through a four-speed manual gearbox. Just 491 chassis were laid down before hostilities brought production to a premature end.

In summary:

  • A black/maroon example that’s currently wrapped in ivory
  • Features limousine coachwork by Park Ward
  • In charming original, unrestored condition
