May 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 34

1960 Rover 100

Registration - TSL 807

Chassis No. - 650005765

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 51,657

P4 Rovers have a level of gravitas that’s generally absent from so many of today’s computer-generated tin boxes. The 1964 example on offer features white bodywork matched to a red leather interior. Following a period in store it has been recommissioned and is in running order. Apparently the subject of some previous attention to the bodywork, its exterior and interior are currently described by the vendor as ‘presentable, with room for improvement’ – hence the very realistic sales estimate. The odometer currently registers an unwarranted 51,657 which, according to Experian Autocheck, has been accrued by a total of eight keepers from new. The Rover comes complete with tow hook, pair of Lucas auxiliary lights, period push-button radio and the majority of its original tools. A seemingly honest survivor of a venerable breed.

Launched in 1949, the distinctive Phil Armstrong-designed Rover P4 family of four-door saloons remained in production until 1964. Over 130,000 were produced in that time, a good number of which continue to provide sterling service to this day. The cars featured a separate chassis, all but the last of which were clothed in aluminium. The front suspension was by coil springs, while the rear comprised a live axle supported by semi-elliptic leaf springs. The early cars had drum brakes all round, with Girling discs becoming standard on the front from 1959 onwards. With the exception of the ‘80’ models, all versions were powered by examples of the overhead inlet/side exhaust valve (F head) engine first seen in the P3. In 1959, the range was reduced to two models – the four-cylinder ‘80’ (with Land Rover-derived OHV engine) and six-cylinder ‘100’ (with 2,625cc short-stroke version of the 3-litre P5 unit).

In summary:

  • Recently recommissioned following a period of storage
  • A presentable example that’s benefited from previous attention to the bodywork
  • A cost-effective passport into P4 ownership
