March 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 34

1974 MGB GT V8
Show winning car, cover star of MG Enthusiast Magazine August 2021

Registration - VPO 599N

Chassis No. - GD2D11609G

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 50,934

If cars could talk, an interview with ‘VPO 599N’ would make an excellent magazine feature. It was first registered in September 1974 to a resident of Hove, to whom it was delivered by Wadham Stringer of Worthing. It then passed through two further keepers before being acquired by a John Coombs of Irchester, Northants in c.1997; a declared classic car enthusiast who sold an XK150 to make way for the MG. As fully documented by a 2021 cover feature in the MG Enthusiast magazine, he retained the car in tip-top order from day one, and enjoyed many road trips at home and abroad with his wife before passing away in 2018. Throughout his tenure of the V8, Coombs had enjoyed the help and support of his neighbour, whose dedication was ultimately rewarded when he was gifted the GT by the Coombs family in 2020.

It is self-evident that he has bestowed the same level of love and affection on the car as his friend, and it presents extremely well. While in his ownership the front seats have been retrimmed in their original hue by an Aston Martin-trained upholsterer, and the car won the ‘Best Show and Shine’ Award at the 2022 Santa Pod ‘Best of British’ event - one of many such gatherings at which it has featured. He currently classes the Glacier White paintwork (which was renewed in 1992) and Autumn Leaf upholstery as ‘excellent’, and the V8 engine, overdrive gearbox and bodywork as ‘good’. This lovely example of an increasingly admired model is now being offered complete with Hopkins handling kit, stainless steel exhaust, Moto-Lita wood-rim steering wheel, Alpine stereo system, wooden gear knob, tool kit, two sets of keys, some rally plates and an extensive selection of paperwork; including MOTs that support the indicated mileage of just 50,934. There is also a current certificate valid into August.

Powered by the ubiquitous 3528cc eight-cylinder Rover engine, the MGB GT V8 was introduced in 1973, but axed only three years later after just 2,591 had been built. Good ones are now keenly sought by collectors belatedly appreciating the model’s unique charms.

In summary:

  • A lovingly maintained award-winning example
  • Just 50,934 and six keepers from new
  • includes stainless exhaust, overdrive and Alpine stereo
