September 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 34

1995 Mercedes-Benz E220 Cabriolet
A simply exceptional example of the increasingly desirable pillarless (W124)

Registration - N668 CVN

Chassis No. - WDB1240622C276877

M.O.T. - June 2023

Odometer - 65,590

Few cabriolets can match the mix of accommodation, comfort and elegance that was afforded by Mercedes’ W124 offerings. The notably well-presented example on offer has only had three keepers from new, the most recent of whom is an enthusiastic member of the Mercedes-Benz Classic Car Club, who’s retained the car since 2015. Its attractive blue bodywork is matched to a blue hood and grey hide interior trim, and the Benz rides on apparently unmarked period-correct alloy wheels shod with a set of recently purchased tyres. The vendor considers all major aspects of the cabriolet to be in ‘excellent’ condition and is now offering somebody else the chance to enjoy this fine example, which comes complete with its original over-mats, owner’s manuals and a comprehensive service history.

Launched in 1985 as a replacement for the successful and long-running W123 series, the mid-size Mercedes-Benz W124 range built on its predecessor’s reputation for thorough design and meticulous construction, while adding a welcome dash of driver appeal to the recipe. The line-up of petrol engines ranged in size from 2.0 to 5.0-litres and diesel ones from 2.0 to 3.0-litres. Though initially only available in saloon guise, the offering was gradually expanded to include an estate and coupe. The two-door cabriolet was the final addition, being offered with 3.2-litre (E320) six-cylinder engine from 1991. A 2.2-litre (E220) version was added to the mix two years later. The pair remained in production long after their saloon and estate siblings had been replaced. The E220’s engine produced some 148bhp and 155 lb ft of torque – sufficient to power the cabriolet to 62mph in 11 seconds and a top speed of 125mph.

In summary:

  • A notably well-presented, enthusiast-owned example
  • Just three owners and 65,590 indicated miles from new
  • Comes complete with comprehensive service history
