The Bolesworth Castle November 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 34

2002 Bentley Continental R Mulliner
Desirable wide-body, Mulliner specification and believed to be one of just c150 built

Registration - DG02 NTF

Chassis No - SCBZB25E32CH01785

M.O.T. - May 2024

Odometer - 70,000

The trophies, rosettes, rally plaques and even t-shirts bearing its image imply this handsome wide-bodied Mulliner has been a source of considerable pride to its owners, of which there have just four private and two dealer ones to date. Figures vary, but suffice to say that only c.150 Bentley Continental R Mulliners were built, making ‘DG02 NTF’ a rare and exciting proposition for Bentley collectors. Features of note include the twin exhausts that were commissioned from Janspeed to factory finish in 2007, and the lack of wing vents that were deleted from the order by the first owner. The vendor assures us that the Silver Storm paintwork bears no scratches or perceptible damage, and that the original Connolly leather interior in Cotswold with French Navy top roll and accents is in equally impressive condition, displaying ‘a lovely patina’. He further asserts that the car is ‘eminently comfortable to drive’, with ‘the smoothest of changes’ from the four-speed automatic transmission. The Bentley’s service book has accumulated 31 service stamps in 21 years, while the MOT records support the indicated mileage of 70,090. This sumptuous motorcar comes complete with recently-replaced battery, spare wheel, tools (including a pair of factory-supplied gloves), all the aforementioned trophies, plus no less than two lever arch files and a pair of document boxes full of history, plus a current MOT valid until May 9, 2024. The car is also offered along with the retention document for the registration BCR 129M (signifying Bentley Continental R, 129th made, Mulliner).

Launched at the Geneva Salon of 1991, the Continental R was the first Bentley model since the S3 of 1965 to have a body unique to the marque; it was no re-badged Rolls-Royce. Clearly the Sultan of Brunei approved, as he bought the 1991 show car at the exhibition. The Continental R Mulliner version arrived in 1999, equipped with the most powerful of Bentley’s ubiquitous OHV turbocharged 6.75-litre V8 engine, hitherto only found in the Continental T. With an output of 420bhp and 650 lb ft of torque the Mulliner could attain speeds of up to 170mph – territory previously reserved for supercars.

In summary:

  • A splendid wide-bodied example of the most powerful Continental R
  • Offered with substantial history files and well documented provenance
  • A rare motorcar, with just c.150 built
