  Lot 35

1958 Bentley S1
*** NO RESERVE *** The subject of a full respray and retrim in the last three years

Registration - GFO 266

Chassis No. - B531EK

M.O.T. - March 2023

Odometer - 25,718

‘GFO 266’ was supplied new to the first of its eight keepers by Jack Barclay of London, and first registered in April 1958. It has been in the vendor’s care since March 2019, since when it has been reupholstered in red leather and fully repainted in its current livery of silver over maroon. In addition, the headlining and carpets have been replaced, as have the brakes and brake lines. The vendor now considers the six-cylinder engine, automatic transmission, Standard Steel bodywork, paintwork and interior trim to all be in ‘good’ order. He is now offering the Bentley complete with its original Radiomobile push-button radio, service manuals, jack, foot pump, torch, spare wheel and wheelbrace, plus a current MOT certificate valid into March next year.

The Bentley S1 was unveiled in April 1955. A very different car from its predecessors, it was both longer and wider and based on a much stiffer chassis of 16-gauge closed box-section design, complete with cruciform centre bracing. The vast majority were delivered with the standard body produced by Pressed Steel Ltd, that featured weight-saving alloy doors, bonnet and boot lid. The newcomer was powered by the final iteration of the company’s venerable 4.9-litre straight-six engine, that featured revised cylinder-head porting and produced 178bhp. S1s were offered with a choice of wheelbase -10 ft 3in or 10 ft 7 in. Of the total of 3,107 produced between 1955 and 1959, 35 featured the longer wheelbase and 157 were fitted with coachbuilt bodies. The price at introduction ranged from c.£4,669 to £6,894 depending on specification. The model could accelerate to 60mph in around 14.2 seconds and just exceed the magic 100mph.

In summary:

  • The subject of a full respray and retrim in the last three years
  • Reserved for special occasions by the current keeper
  • Comes complete with a full set of service manuals and tools
