The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 35

1988 Lotus Esprit Turbo
Owned by the same family since 1990

Registration - E690JLK

Chassis No. - SCC082910JHD13162

M.O.T. - July 2023

Odometer - 103,621

‘E690 JLK’ has remained within the same family ownership since 1990, and is finished in the striking combination of Calypso Red bodywork and magnolia-coloured interior trim. It was apparently resprayed in its original colour in 2008 due to faded paintwork and has been regularly serviced by the family’s local Lotus specialists – Allon White and GST Performance. The vendor informs us that the car ‘runs well’ and has benefited from the recent replacement of the engine belts. The original mild steel fuel tanks were replaced for low corrosion replacements some years ago - one is aluminium, whilst the other is stainless steel. The vendor now views the turbo engine, five-speed manual transmission, bodywork and paintwork as ‘good’, but the interior trim as ‘below average’. Indeed, he volunteers that the headlining is in need of replacement and that the driver’s seat would benefit from refurbishment. In addition, the rear springs and dampers were advisories at the last MOT due to corrosion. The Lotus is now ready for a new keeper and is therefore available for sale complete with an MOT valid all the way to July 12 next year.

For the revamped Esprit of 1987, Lotus looked not to the model’s original stylist, Giorgetto Giugiaro, but British-born Peter Stevens of McLaren F1 fame, who gave it a more rounded, softer look, coincident with which the company introduced a new, increasingly automated body manufacture process called VARI (Vacuum Assisted Resin Injection). Underneath little had changed, the newcomer being based on a galvanised steel backbone chassis powered by the company’s four-cylinder 2,174cc engine that offered 210bhp in turbo form - sufficient for a 0-60mph time of 5.5 seconds and top speed of 150mph-plus. The powerplant was mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, suspension was independent all round, braking was by discs front and rear, and steering by rack and pinion.

In summary:

  • Owned by the same family since 1990
  • Recently treated to new engine belts and fuel tanks
  • Four owners and 103,621 miles from new
