February 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 35

1997 Mercedes-Benz SL 280
Only 62,000 miles

Registration - R184 GDX

Chassis No. - WDB1290582F155942

M.O.T. - June 2022

Odometer - 62,024

The silver bodywork of this very tidy SL 280 is perfectly complemented by its dark blue leather interior trim. First registered in August 1997, it currently registers a relatively modest 62,024 miles from new, which has been amassed by a total of just three keepers. In recent times it has been reserved for use on special occasions by the lady of the house, and therefore accumulated very little mileage between MOTs. The vendor informs us that ‘R184 GDX’ ‘is a very straight car, with only a few age related chips on the bonnet and slight skirt damage around the area of the nearside jacking point’. Overall, he grades the six-cylinder engine and automatic transmission as ‘excellent’ and the bodywork, paintwork and upholstery as ‘good’. He is now offering the big Benz complete with hard and soft tops and a current MOT that’s valid into June.

Mercedes have been producing an SL (Sport Leicht) model since 1954, when the landmark 300SL was unveiled. The second generation was distinguished by its lower waistline, big curved screens and a distinctive optional hardtop that earned the model its nickname of ‘Pagoda’. The larger, third generation SL was launched in 1971, while the fourth (R129 Series) was unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show of 1989. It was a beautifully-engineered car that bristled with technical refinement and innovative safety features. The specification included independent suspension all round (double wishbone at the front/five link system at the rear), adaptive damping, ventilated disc brakes with ABS, electronic stability control, integral roll-over bar and front air bags. A total of 213,089 R129s are understood to have been manufactured before the model was superseded by the R230 in 2001.

In summary:

  • Relatively modest mileage of 62,024 and just three owners from new
  • Comes complete with colour-keyed factory hardtop
  • Recent use confined to special occasions
