The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 36

1966 Austin-Healey 3000 MKIII Phase 3
Subject to a no-expense-spared restoration and a plethora of useful upgrades

Registration - TBC - Please note that the registration shown in the photographs will not accompany the car

Chassis No. - HBJ8L34956

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 1,874 since rebuild

This beautifully-presented late model 3000 was imported from the USA and has remained in its current ownership for the last 12 years. The car is finished in red and trimmed in black leather and rides on silver painted wire wheels. It has been the subject of a no-expense-spared restoration and uprate and appears to want for nothing. The engine was bored out and completely rebuilt, as was the overdrive gearbox, and the body treated to a bare metal respray. The plethora of performance upgrades include: 9.3:1 compression ratio aluminium lead-free cylinder head, 123 distributor, six-branch stainless steel exhaust manifold, 80 amp alternator, high torque lightweight starter, aluminium sump and rocker cover, bespoke aluminium radiator, new old-stock 3.54:1 differential, MGF power steering system, four-pot Coopercraft brake calipers, aluminium fuel tank, stainless steel wire wheels. The vendor now understandably has no hesitation in classing the straight-six engine, transmission, 2+2 bodywork, paintwork and upholstery as all being in ‘excellent’ order. He is now offering the big Healey complete with a finely detailed history file covering the work carried out, sundry old MOTs and a Heritage certificate. Just 1,874 miles have been amassed since the completion of the restoration.

The big Healey enjoyed steady development, with the original four-cylinder cars giving way to the 100-Six of 1956, which was replaced by the first of the 3000s in 1959. The final iteration was the 3000 MKIII, which was launched in October 1963. The most powerful and luxurious of all the derivatives, it had lively performance courtesy of a 150bhp straight-six engine, and featured such niceties as wind up windows and a walnut-veneer facia. Production closed at the end of 1967 after 42,926 had been made, 17,712 of which were MKIIIs.

In summary:

  • The subject of a no-expense spared restoration
  • Equipped with a plethora of performance upgrades
  • Has remained in its current ownership for the last 12 years
