March 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 36

1967 Triumph Herald 12/50
The subject of more than £60,000 in expenditure

Registration - PPG 10E

Chassis No. - GD50007R/S

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - TBC

Unless you either sold Triumph’s for a living in period or bought one when new, it’s doubtful if you’ve ever seen a Herald in this condition – we haven’t. It is perhaps no surprise then, to learn that the car has been the subject of a recent £60,000 nut and bolt restoration, as well as being a low mileage example whose five keepers have amassed a total of only 33,899 miles - ie just over 600 per annum. It’s finished in Petrol Blue, trimmed in blue vinyl and rides on Michelin Energy-shod cream wheels, and the vendor considers its 1147cc engine, four-speed manual transmission, bodywork and upholstery to all be in ‘excellent’ condition, and the paintwork to be ‘good’. He adds that the Herald is ‘nearly as nice underneath as it is on top’ and is now offering ‘PPG 10E’ complete with factory-fitted sunroof, huge history file containing numerous photos of the restoration, and a Heritage Certificate.

Standard-Triumph launched the Herald in 1959 as a replacement for its ageing Standard 8/10 models. It bucked the trend towards monocoque construction by featuring a separate chassis to which the main tub was bolted. The one-piece front end folded forwards to provide optimum access to the engine and suspension, while all outer panels – including the roof – could be unbolted for easy repair. The Herald 1200 appeared in April 1961 and brought with it a rise in engine capacity from 948 to 1147cc, as well as a wooden laminate facia and improved seating. The 12/50 combined the pretty look of the early cars with (almost) the performance of the later 13/60, plus disc brakes and a Webasto sunroof.

The model’s design made for the ready adoption of alternative body styles and saloon, coupe, convertible, estate and van derivatives were all offered during the model’s 12-year reign, over which production numbers exceeded 300,000.

In summary:

  • An immaculate example – just 5 owners and 33,899 miles from new
  • The subject of a recent £60,000 nut and bolt restoration
  • Comes with numerous restoration photos and Heritage Certificate
