February 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 36

1997 TVR Chimaera

Registration - GHZ 686

Chassis No. - SDLDCC4P5VL012394

M.O.T. - September 2022

Odometer - 67,228

Finished in a shade of opalescent yellow and trimmed in contrasting blue leather, ‘GHZ 686’ would be something of a show-stopper in any company. It is powered by the 4.0-litre version of the Rover V8 engine, which drives through a five-speed manual gearbox. It has remained in the vendor’s care since 2005, prior to which there were just three other keepers. Between them they have amassed a very acceptable total mileage of 67,228. Since acquiring the TVR, the vendor has had it maintained and serviced by a Blackpool-based ex-works TVR specialist, with whom he has recently invested some £800 in the car. He informs us that the all-important chassis is in ‘good’ condition and presently considers the powerplant, transmission, fibreglass bodywork and paintwork to all be in ‘excellent’ order, and views the upholstery as ‘good’ – eg there is a minor degree of scuffing on the driver’s seat bolster. He is now offering the car complete with service history and other paperwork, plus a current MOT valid to September 9.

The Chimaera shared its backbone chassis and derivatives of the Rover V8 engine with the Griffith. The difference between the siblings was that the Chimaera featured slightly softer suspension and greater internal space thanks to a longer body. The engine options ranged from 4.0 to 5.0-litres, even the smallest of which pumped out 240bhp - sufficient to power the two-seater roadster to 60mph in 5.1 seconds and on to a terminal speed of over 150mph. Production continued until 2002/2003, when the Chimaera was replaced by the Tamora, by which time 5,256 examples had vacated the Blackpool factory, making it the most popular TVR of all time.

In summary:

  • A handsome example with just four keepers and 67,228 miles from new
  • In the current ownership for the last 17 years
  • Well maintained by an ex-works TVR specialist
