November 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 37

1995 MG RV8

Registration - P494 WMJ

Chassis No. - SARRAWBMBMG002150

M.O.T. - May 2023

Odometer - 28,848 (actual mileage 78,333)

The vendor of this very smartly-presented RV8 acquired it last year from renowned MG aficionados Brown & Gammons who, along with other marque specialists, have been involved in the vehicle’s comprehensive maintenance for the last 18 years. A late build, ‘P494 WMJ’ started life as a Japanese export and, following repatriation, was first UK registered in May 2001. It is finished in Forest Green (the most popular RV8 colour), which is perfectly complemented by the combination of Stone Beige upholstery and burr elm veneered facia and door caps. The extensive specification includes a stainless steel exhaust system, ECU chip, electrically-assisted power steering, Spax dampers, air conditioning, wind deflector, Sony DAB/FM radio and spot lights. The vendor presently classes the V8 engine, five-speed manual transmission and bodywork as ‘excellent’ and the paintwork and upholstery as ‘good’, and adds that ‘the car is undersealed, has been well cared for and runs beautifully’. He is now offering the MG complete with a ‘good, relatively new, hood’, spare wheel, tool roll, minor selection of spares, repair manual and a sizeable history file of receipts and old MOTs, plus a current certificate valid to May 10 next year.

British Motor Heritage’s manufacture of bodyshells for Britain’s favourite sports car commenced in 1988 in order to serve the burgeoning restoration market. This also allowed the creation of the RV8, all 1,983 shells for which were manufactured by the company between 1992 and 1995, prior to the cars’ assembly in a special department at Cowley. Powered by a 187bhp, 3.9-litre version of the venerable Rover V8, the sumptuously-trimmed two-seater could sprint to 60mph in 6.9 seconds and on to a terminal speed of 136mph. Eighty percent of production was exported to Japan, but c.700 examples have since been repatriated and are increasingly sought by collectors desiring the last and arguably best of the MGB line.

In summary:

  • A very well-presented, well cared for example
  • Extensive spec. includes power steering, air-con, stainless exhaust
  • Total mileage courtesy of two speedometers – c.73,000
