Few modern Porsches offer quite the same combination of performance, balance and open-top enjoyment as the second-generation Boxster S. The 987 represented a significant development of Porsche’s mid-engined roadster formula, with sharper styling, a beautifully resolved chassis and, in S specification, considerably greater performance from its larger flat-six engine.

This 2006 Porsche Boxster S is an especially appealing example, combining the desirable six-speed manual transmission with just 60,516 miles and an extensive documented service history.

Finished in silver with a contrasting black hood and black interior, ‘PX55 BJO’ retains the understated appearance for which the 987-generation Boxster has aged particularly well. The cabin remains pleasingly driver-focused, with its three-dial Porsche instrument cluster dominated by the centrally positioned rev counter. Black leather trim, a three-spoke steering wheel and the short manual gear lever create an appropriately sporting environment, while the electrically operated hood allows the car to transform readily from coupé-like refinement to open-air motoring.

Of particular note is the accompanying original service and maintenance book, which provides an excellent chronological record of the Porsche’s maintenance and mileage over many years.

According to the accompanying service book, the car was maintained extensively within the Porsche network during its earlier life. A service at Porsche Centre Kendal is recorded on 30th October 2007 at 11,280 miles, followed by a further visit to the same Porsche Centre on 26th October 2009 at 20,869 miles.

The history continues with Porsche Centre Guildford on 21st October 2011 at 32,023 miles, followed by Porsche Centre Mid-Sussex on 18th October 2013 at 45,296 miles. Porsche Service Centre Brooklands subsequently attended to the car on 24th September 2015 at 53,092 miles.

Thereafter, the service book records continued maintenance with F.A. Donovan & Son of Elton Garage, Sandbach. Entries are recorded on 9th November 2017 at 55,826 miles, 18th July 2020 at 57,531 miles and 4th May 2022 at 58,138 miles.

Importantly, the accompanying records extend beyond straightforward service stamps. The maintenance book contains entries relating to additional scheduled items including brake-fluid changes and airbag-system inspections, while later maintenance records indicate attention to items including spark plugs and the drive belt.

The progression of mileages throughout the service book is particularly reassuring. From 11,280 miles in 2007, the Porsche had covered 20,869 miles by 2009, 32,023 by 2011, 45,296 by 2013 and 53,092 by 2015. Its use subsequently appears to have become considerably lighter, with 55,826 miles recorded in 2017, 57,531 in 2020 and 58,138 in May 2022. The odometer today displays just 60,516 miles.

The accompanying paperwork also includes invoices for maintenance carried out over the years, adding further substance to the service book and providing prospective purchasers with an opportunity to examine the expenditure and care the Porsche has received.

The vendor informs us that the car has been highly cherished, and its combination of modest mileage and substantial documented maintenance history certainly adds considerably to its appeal.

Now approaching the age at which the best 987-generation cars are attracting increasing interest from enthusiasts, the Boxster S represents a particularly compelling proposition. The combination of a naturally aspirated flat-six engine, mid-engined chassis and six-speed manual transmission delivers an experience increasingly removed from that of contemporary performance cars.
