November 2022 Classics Auction
1962 Triumph Herald 1200 Convertible

It is fair to say that ‘PSK 897’ is not quite as it vacated the Triumph factory 60 years ago. The most obvious variations are the replacement of the bonnet and boot with Vitesse items – hence the Chinese-eye headlights. The engine would appear to be a later, larger capacity Herald 13/60 unit, while the attractive wood facia and door caps also represent changes from the original specification. According to Experian Autocheck, the car was grey until repainted Teal Blue in 1982, but the current livery works equally well the car’s yellow-piped grey interior trim and black carpet, while the wheels benefit from a set of stainless steel trims. The current hood is black, but the Triumph comes with a brand new white replacement hood and hood cover, not to mention a colour-keyed hard top. The vendor presently classes all major aspects of the convertible as ‘average’ and is now offering it complete with the original owner’s handbook and various items of paperwork. The odometer currently registers 60,241 miles.
Standard-Triumph launched the Herald in 1959 as a replacement for its ageing Standard 8/10 models. It bucked the trend towards monocoque construction by featuring a separate chassis to which the main tub was bolted. The one-piece front end folded forwards to provide optimum access to the engine and suspension, while all outer panels – including the roof – could be unbolted for easy repair. The Herald 1200 appeared in April 1961 together with a rise in engine capacity from 948 to 1147cc. The model’s design made for the ready adoption of alternative body styles and saloon, coupe, convertible, estate and van derivatives were all offered during the model’s 12-year reign, over which production numbers exceeded 300,000.
