The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 39

1966 Austin-Healey 3000 MKIII Phase 2

Registration - PUA 384D

Chassis No. - H-BJ8-L/34520

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 76,804

‘PUA 384D’ was originally exported to North America and finished in the combination of Ivory White and black hide. It remained the other side of the pond until being repatriated in 2008, since when it has had just two keepers. Having been treated to a change of personality, it is now righthand drive and resplendent in a pleasing shade of metallic red and luxuriously trimmed in red-piped cream leather. The vendor describes the straight-six engine, four-speed manual transmission with overdrive, 2+2 bodywork, paintwork and upholstery as ‘excellent’ throughout, and is now selling the Big Healey complete with chrome wire wheels, boot rack, quarterlight driver’s mirror and Heritage Certificate. The indicated total mileage of 76,804 is unwarranted but wholly credible. A fine looking-example of one of the most popular of all British classics.

Donald Healey’s eponymous company built a prototype two-seater sports car for display at the 1952 London Motor Show. Not only did it impress the public, but so excited Austin’s Managing Director Leonard Lord, that he struck a deal to build the car in volume at Longbridge. Renamed the Austin Healey 100, it enjoyed steady development with the four-cylinder cars giving way to the 100-Six of 1956, which was replaced by the first of the 3000s in 1959. The final iteration was the 3000 MKIII, which was launched in October 1963 and mildly upgraded (Phase 2) in May the following year. The most powerful and luxurious of all the derivatives, it had lively performance courtesy of a 150bhp straight-six engine and featured such niceties as wind up windows and a walnut-veneer facia. Production closed at the end of 1967 after 42,926 had been made, 17,712 of which were MKIIIs.

In summary:

  • Originally an American export that was repatriated in 2008
  • Splendidly presented in the combination of metallic red bodywork and cream hide
  • Comes complete with Heritage Certificate
