May 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 39

1986 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL

Registration - D377 TJC

Chassis No. - WDB1070412A051823

M.O.T. - 2nd May 2023

Odometer - 103,271

The vendor describes this handsome righthand drive Diamond Metallic Blue R107 SL as ‘running well’ and being in ‘good, original condition’. He presently grades the straight-six engine, automatic transmission, bodywork and paintwork as ‘excellent’ and the two-tone leather interior trim as ‘good to excellent’. Its six keepers to date have amassed 103,271 miles between them and the big Benz is being sold complete with a full service history up to five years ago, at which point the previous keeper passed away and the car was placed in storage until now. ‘D377 TJC’ also comes with both hard and soft tops and is MOTd until May 2023.

The larger, third generation SL (R107) was launched in 1971, initially with just a 3.5-litre engine (350 SL) mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. The car featured a two-door monocoque bodyshell with independent suspension all round – double wishbone and coil springs at the front and semi-trailing arms and coil springs at the rear. The power-assisted steering was Daimler-Benz’s own recirculating ball system. Braking was by discs all round – ventilated on the front. The range grew to two models when the 4.5-litre (450 SL) derivative arrived the following year and to three when the 2.8-litre (280 SL) appeared in mainland Europe in 1974. The latter became available in the UK from October 1980 and remained in production until 1985, when it was replaced by the 300 SL. This variant was powered by a 2,962cc engine producing 185bhp at 5,700rpm and 188 lb ft of torque at 4,400rpm – sufficient output to endow the Mercedes with rapid acceleration and a potential top speed of 130mph.

  • An apparently very original well cared-for example
  • Specification includes both hard and soft tops
  • Comes with full service history a full year’s MOT
