November 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 4

1996 Mazda 323F
*** NO RESERVE ***

Registration - N898 GLG

Chassis No. - JMZBA145201335473

M.O.T. - April 2023

Odometer - 65,890

This car presents well and is a tribute to the family that have owned the Mazda from new – it initially belonged to the father, with the daughter assuming tenure after he passed away. It still bears the registration plates of its supplying dealer, the Pentraeth Automotive Group of Menai Bridge, Gwynedd, and enjoyed full Mazda service up to 55,000 miles and maintenance courtesy of the family’s local garage for the subsequent 10,890. The vendor currently rates the twin-cam engine and manual transmission as ‘good to excellent’ and the five-door bodywork, red paintwork and grey cloth interior trim as ‘average to good’ – the only obvious sign of wear and tear being fraying fabric on the driver’s seat bolster. ‘N898 GLG’ is now being offered complete with glass sunroof, radio/CD and Mazda-logoed carpet mats front and rear. According to one source, the car could be one of only four 323Fs currently licensed for UK roads.

Mazda’s 323F was one of a number of the company’s models that, somewhat confusingly, shared similar platforms but featured completely different bodies, all aimed at the same segment of compact cars. A five-door frontwheel drive hatchback, the F featured frameless windows, low roofline and sporty appearance, and was more aerodynamic than the regular hatchback - a tough competitor for rival marques. The model was powered by a choice of three petrol engines ranging in capacity from 1.5 to 2.0 litres. The DOHC 16-valve 1.5–litre unit, as fitted to the sale car, had an output of 87bhp, which was sufficient for a 0-60mph time of around 11.5 seconds and top speed of 110mph. Drive was via a five-speed manual gearbox and braking by discs/drums.

In summary:

  • A genuine one family owner example displaying 65,890 miles
  • Full Mazda service history up to 55,000 miles
  • A well-presented example of a very rare model
