February 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 40

1960 Jaguar XK150 3.4 Drophead Coupe
A beautiful, unrestored home market RHD example. The accompanying V5 shows just one previous owner, who was a Shell Oil board member

Registration - PWB 387

Chassis No. - S827558.DN

M.O.T. - February 2023

Odometer - 68,455

This delightfully original home market Jaguar has remained within the same ownership since 2015, and the DVLA records show only one previous keeper – a board member of the Shell Oil company. The accompanying Heritage Certificate confirms that ‘PWB 387’ came off line on April 8, 1960 and was despatched to the original distributor, PJ Evans of Birmingham, 14 days later. At the time, the car was finished in Mist Grey, but that colour was replaced by the current livery of Old English White in the early ‘70s, which is matched to red leather interior trim, red carpet and a black hood and hood cover. The only departures from original specification have been the replacement of the seats with a pair of splendid bucket ones and the period four-speed gearbox with a modern five-speed equivalent. The vendor presently regards the transmission and 3.4-litre XK engine to be in ‘excellent’ order, and the drophead bodywork, paintwork and upholstery to be ‘good’, and adds that ‘the car is very solid and mechanically sound’. Having thoroughly enjoyed the XK during his tenure and regular displayed it at concours events, he is now offering it for sale complete with the original seats, Heritage Certificate and a full 12 months’ worth of MOT. A rare opportunity to acquire an unmolested example of one of the British motor industry’s most desirable classic sports cars.

By the time the XK150 was launched in May 1957, Jaguar had won Le Mans four times and was about to do so again – what a backdrop against which to market a new sports car. By the time it was superseded by the E-Type in 1961, some 2,672 drophead coupe versions had been produced.

In summary:

  • A remarkably original specimen in excellent overall order
  • Benefits from the fitment of a modern five-speed gearbox
  • Apparently just two owners from new and just 68,455 recorded miles
