The Bolesworth Castle November 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 40

1973 Jaguar E-Type Roadster
A credible 37,000 mile right-hand drive, home market example, specified with the more desirable manual transmission

Registration - RVT 832M

Chassis No - 1S2197

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 37,212

This fine-looking Series 3 E-Type has travelled just 5,144 miles in the last 17 years, and a credible total mileage of 37,089 since new – heady figures apparently supported by service records, maintenance invoices and old MOTs. It is an original righthand drive, home market example that was supplied new to its first owner in Rotherham on September 24, 1973. Its Old English White bodywork contrasts perfectly with the black leather interior trim, black hood and chrome wire wheels. Recent attention from the current keeper has included some general tidying and the installation of new carpet in the footwells and boot. He now classes the V12 engine and manual four-speed gearbox as ‘excellent’, and the electrics, roadster bodywork, paintwork and upholstery as ‘good’. This charismatic cat is now seeking a new home, and comes complete with history file containing Heritage Certificate, photos, letters and invoices, plus old MOT certificates up to 1990.

By 1971, Jaguar's jaw-dropping E-Type had been in production for a decade. Despite continual improvements, new emissions legislation in the all-important American market threatened to strangle the big cat's performance. Jaguar responded by giving it fresh claws in the shape of a 5,343cc V12 engine developed from the stillborn XJ13 Le Mans car. The new engine was both effortlessly powerful and eerily refined. With some 272bhp and 304 lb ft of torque on tap, the E-Type once again had 150mph in its sights. A revised wheelbase yielded better cabin space, while a wider track front and rear, anti-dive front suspension geometry and fatter tyres improved the road holding. A more muscular stance resulted from flared wheelarches, re-profiled wings and larger grille. The newcomer also benefited from vented disc brakes and a restyled interior.

Production continued until the E-Type was superseded by the XJS in 1975, by when c.15,000 V12-engined cars had been produced.

In summary:

  • Just 5,144 miles travelled in the last 17 years
  • A genuine righhand drive, manual gearbox, home market example
  • Comes with good supporting history and Heritage Certificate
