The Bolesworth Castle November 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 41

1957 Austin A35
***NO RESERVE*** The subject of an older-restoration, displaying a credible 57,000 miles from new

Registration - 640 EPG

Chassis No. - A2S5HCS6572

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 56,846

It is now rare to have an A35 presented as tidily and to such original specification as ‘640 EPG’. It was evidently the subject of an earlier restoration that has stood the test of time well, and the car has remained within the current ownership since April 2017, when the vendor acquired it from a Brightwell’s auction – the accompanying V5 shows there were just five previous keepers, making a modest total of six to date. The smart blue paintwork is matched to two-tone blue interior trim and quality blue carpets, while the little Austin rides on well shod silver-painted wheels equipped with shiny period-correct chrome hub caps. The vendor presently considers the A Series engine, four-speed manual transmission, two-door bodywork, paintwork and upholstery to all be in ‘excellent’ order. He is now offering the A35 complete with Smiths heater, starting handle and tools, spare wheel, owner’s handbook, workshop manual, lubrication chart and owner’s club booklet containing spares and services information, plus an assortment of invoices. The odometer currently registers an unwarranted but totally credible 56,846 miles from new.

Launched at the 1951 Earls Court Motor Show as the ‘New Austin Seven’, Austin’s A30 was created as a direct competitor to the already very successful Morris Minor. It was the first car of monocoque construction to be produced by Austin, and initially only offered in four-door guise – the two-door version followed in 1953, with the van and Countryman estate variants coming on stream another year later. When unveiled, the A30 was priced at £507, deliberately undercutting the Minor by £62. A total of 223,264 examples had been produced by the time the model range was superseded by the A35 in 1956. The newcomer was a direct development of the A30, the key differences from which were its 948 rather than 803cc A Series engine that delivered 35bhp (hence the model’s name), improved gear ratios, larger rear window, flashing indicators in place of semaphore arms, and a painted rather than chromed front grille. Ultimately there were five derivatives made – two and four-door saloons, Countryman estate, van and a small number of pick-ups. Total production for the range was 280,897.

In summary:

  • A very tidily presented, original-looking six-keeper example
  • The subject of a previous good-quality restoration
  • Being sold at No Reserve
