The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 41

1991 Ford Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth 4x4

Registration - H581 JDE

Chassis No. - WFOFXXGBBFLG67501

M.O.T. - No M.O.T.

Odometer - 72,000

‘H581 JDE’ started life as a lefthand drive model that was then imported to the UK and converted to righthand drive in 2016. Finished in black and trimmed in matching leather throughout, it rides on refurbished Sharktooth alloy wheels. The relatively modest indicated total mileage of 72,000 is believed to be correct and this smart Cossie has recently benefited from a service and replacement of the cambelt, tensioners, and fan belt. The car is described by the vendor as ‘100 percent rust free’ and he presently classes the turbo engine, five-speed manual transmission, bodywork, paintwork and upholstery as all being in ‘good’ order, and is now selling the car complete with sunroof, selection of old invoices, and both French and UK registration documents.

Released in the September of 1982, the Ford Sierra was a replacement for the ubiquitous Cortina and its German sibling, the Taunus. Sales ultimately totalled 1,299,993 units, making it Britain’s 10th most popular car up to that time. Always quick to support the performance and motorsport markets, Ford introduced the be-winged XR4i version in 1983. This was followed by the XR 4x4 in 1985, the Sierra RS Cosworth in 1986, the Sierra RS500 Cosworth in 1987, the Sierra Sapphire in 1988 and the Sierra Sapphire RS Cosworth 4x4 in 1990; some 12,250 of which were manufactured before Ford’s power mantle was assumed by the Escort RS Cosworth in 1992. Though the 4x4 Sapphire never managed to emulate the two-wheel drive Cosworth’s victory in a round of the World Rally Championship (Corsica, 1988), it nevertheless become a popular and successful weapon in national events, and examples are still contesting club rallies to this day.

In summary:

  • Imported from France in 2016 and converted to righthand drive
  • Good leather interior and recently refurbished Sharktooth alloy wheels
  • Recent service and replacement of cambelt, tensioners and fan belt
