This big-engined BMW E36 convertible certainly looks the part with its Hellrot Red bodywork matched to a black hood and black leather interior trim, and is a reminder that examples of this generation of 3 Series cars are now quite are rare sight in UK roads. According to Experian Autocheck ‘R2 CJB’ (the cherished number forms part of the lot) has had a total of nine keepers to date, the most recent of whom acquired the car in September last year. The check also suggests that the car has split its time between the mainland and Northern Ireland. It comes without service history, but the vendor informs us that the battery was renewed in 2016, a full service carried out by WVG Autocare of Warrington in September last year, and an ABS wheel sensor replaced by Vector Vehicle systems just two months ago. He presently grades the straight-six engine, five-speed manual gearbox and convertible bodywork as ‘good’, the paintwork as ‘average’ and the upholstery as ‘below average’. He is now looking to part with the BMW, and is offering it complete with its factory tool set, JVC audio unit, a selection of old receipts and a current MOT valid to August 21.

The third generation of BMW’s all-conquering 3 Series model (code name E36) was launched to much acclaim in October 1990. It was penned by Pinky Lai and Boyke Boyer who, as its silhouette suggests, were intent on optimising the newcomer’s aerodynamics. The model was ultimately produced in saloon, hatchback, coupe, convertible and estate guises, and with a choice of engines ranging from 1.6 to 3.2 litres. The 2.8-litre option available from 1995 to 1998 was a punchy straight-six unit of 193bhp. The E36 range was supplanted by the E46 in the year 2000.

In summary:

  • Comes with a selection of receipts and current MOT
