The Bolesworth Castle November 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 42

1936 Vauxhall Big Six
***NO RESERVE*** By repute one of just nine surviving Grosvenor-bodied Vauxhall Big Six BXLs worldwide

Registration - OXS 652

Chassis No - 640813

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 61,226

There are believed to be just nine surviving Grosvenor-bodied Vauxhall Big Six BXLs worldwide, making ‘OXS 652’ an exceptionally rare motorcar. This stately machine, which is offered at No Reserve, has had just three private owners since 1988. The coachbuilt body is finished in maroon with black wings, while the interior is trimmed in wonderfully patinated brown leather to the front and cloth to the rear. The Big Six has been regularly serviced over the past few decades and benefited from a £3,500 engine and clutch overhaul by T & L Engineering in 2016. The Vauxhall has been fitted with electronic injection, however, the original dynamo forms part of the lot, giving a new owner the option of returning the car to factory specification. The vendor informs us that although it has remained unused since early in 2021, the car does run, and he presently describes the six-cylinder, 27hp engine and electrics as ‘very good’ and the four-speed transmission as ‘good’. The VIP specification of this seven-seater limousine includes: wind-up glass chauffeur’s partition, Pytchley sliding sunroof, rear and side window blinds, cigar lighter and intercom system. While under the tenure of a previous keeper, the car received a degree of interior restoration, suspension refurbishment and rechroming. The odometer presently displays a total of 61,226 miles, and ‘OXS 652’ is now offered complete with a copy of the original handbook, plus two sets of keys and a history file containing past MOTs, invoices and tax discs.

Vauxhall unveiled the luxurious Big Six at the 1933 Motor Show, and it went on sale in August the following year. Three models were offered, the 111-inch wheelbase 20hp BY, 27hp BX and the 130-inch wheelbase 27hp BXL. Six styles were available, with coachbuilt bodies supplied by carrossiers such as the Grosvenor Carriage Company, as was the case with the sale car. 4,584 Big Sixes were built, of which 796 were the BXL model. They were priced at £550 - £225 more than the standard saloon.

In summary:

  • One of just nine Grosvenor BXL limousines remaining worldwide
  • Just three private owners since 1988
  • Being offered at No Reserve
