The Gold Cup Classic Car Auction

  Lot 42

1940 Chevrolet Special Deluxe

Registration - XBV 926

Chassis No. - 0101907479

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 22,250

This splendidly-presented Chevy remained in its native Canada until imported to the UK in 2016, since when it has had a total of four keepers, the most recent of whom has retained the car for the last three years. He informs us that in that time he has progressed through the entire vehicle, fixing any faults and bringing it up to the impressive level you see today. It therefore comes as little surprise that he regards the engine, transmission, bodywork and red/grey paintwork as now being in ‘excellent’ condition and the grey cloth interior as ‘good’. The car sports a full width metal sun visor and rides on white walled tyres, both of which were optional extras in period.

Chevrolet’s Master range remained in production from 1933 to 1942, examples of which were produced in many parts of the world, not least Ontario Canada, from where the sale car originated. By 1940 the model was available as a two or four-door saloon, business or sport coupe, convertible or station wagon and in three levels of trim - namely Master 85, Master Deluxe and Special Deluxe. All versions were powered by the same 216.5ci (3.5-litre) straight-six engine that delivered some 85bhp and 170 lb ft of torque, and drove through a three-speed manual gearbox with column change. The comprehensive specification of the top of the range Special Deluxe version included: a 30-hour clock, front door arm rests, dual wipers, twin air horns and deluxe steering wheel with horn ring. In period the dour-door saloon sold for a princely $802 and was the second most popular version, notching up a total of 138,811 sales during 1940.

In summary:

  • A splendidly-presented example of a stand-out model
  • Imported to the UK from Canada in 2016
  • Treated to a meticulous programme of improvement by the vendor
