  Lot 42

1954 Austin-Healey 100/4 BN1
A rare, home market RHD matching numbers example

Registration - KFK 73

Chassis No. - BN1/159259

M.O.T. - 1B/214544

Odometer -

Few modern cars can match the ‘big’ Healey for purity of design, but mismatching shut-lines have been the curse of many a restoration of these lovely sports cars, and it is the obvious accuracy of the sale car’s immaculate Ice Blue bodywork that makes it so pleasing. It is therefore no surprise to find the restoration was conducted by JME of Warwick, one of the all-time top Healey specialists that operates from The Cape works – the very site on which the Healey 100 was born. A matching numbers car still bearing its original restoration, ‘KFK 73’ emanates from a private collection and has covered little more than 2,000 miles since the completion of the comprehensive refurbishment. Treated to a new battery within the last month, the car is said to ‘start and drive perfectly with good oil pressure’, and is now offered complete with its original buff logbook and handbook, detailed invoices covering the restoration, Heritage Certificate, tonneau cover and spare key. If you’re in the market for a BN1, then look no further, they surely don’t come much better!

Donald Healey’s eponymous company built a prototype two-seater sports car for display at the 1952 London Motor Show. It so excited Austin’s Managing Director, Leonard Lord, that he agreed to build the car in volume at Longbridge. The newcomer was renamed the Austin Healey 100. The rest is history. The early cars (code named BN1s) were equipped with the same 90bhp 2,660cc engines and manual four-speed transmissions as the Austin A90. However, in an unusual move, Austin modified the gearbox so it operated as a three-speed unit with overdrive on the top two ratios.

In summary:

  • Only c.2,000 miles covered since comprehensive restoration by JME
  • Resplendent in Ice Blue complemented by a blue leather interior
  • A matching numbers example complete with original registration, logbook and handbook
