An Auction of Classic and Performance Cars and Motorcycles

  Lot 42

1966 Riley 1.5
*** NO RESERVE ***

Registration - VCH 864

Chassis No. - RHS123494

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - TBC

This original-looking Riley was registered new in March 1966 and, according to Experian Autocheck, has only had four keepers to date. Its green bodywork is teamed with attractive green and cream leather upholstery, the de-luxe feel of which is enhanced by the car’s polished wood facia, while it rides on cream-painted steel wheels shod with Nanakang tyres all-round. It has remained in the vendor’s care for approaching three years and he presently grades its BMC B Series engine as ‘good’, the four-speed manual transmission, four-door bodywork and upholstery as ‘average’, and the paintwork as ‘below average’. He is now offering this apparently solid survivor in very much the specification in which it would have left the factory 57 years ago, plus a pair of chrome wing mirrors and a full set of plastic door protectors.

The Riley 1.5 and Wolseley 1500 siblings were launched by BMC in 1957 and broadly speaking combined the floorpan, steering and suspension of the Morris Minor with the engine and gearbox of the MG Magnette. Some 103,394 Wolseley versions had been made by the cessation of production in 1965. An example tested by The Motor in 1957 required 24.8 seconds to reach 60mph from a standstill and achieved a top speed of 76.7mph, as well as an impressive average fuel consumption of 36.6mpg. The cost of the model when new was £758, including taxes. The Riley alternative, that boasted an additional 20bhp courtesy of a reworked cylinder head and additional SU carburettor, was some six seconds quicker to 60mph, and 6mph faster flat out, but £57 dearer.

In summary:

  • A seemingly very original four-owner example
  • Understood to be one of only 345 currently licensed for the road
  • Being sold at No Reserve
