March 2023 Classic & Performance Car Auction

  Lot 42

1966 Austin Mini Countryman

Registration - KAC 86D

Chassis No. - A/AW7913463

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 76,371

This pretty Countryman was first registered in July 1966 and, according to VDI Check, has only had three keepers from new, the most recent of whom acquired it in 1998. We understand that from 2014 to 2019 it was exported to the Isle of Man, where it formed part of a museum display; a sojourn that required it to be re-registered. However, once back on the mainland it regained its original identity of ‘KAC 86D’, which it continues to wear. The Mini has been the subject of some recent recommissioning that included: replacing the brake pipes, fuel pump and battery; overhauling the front hubs and brakes; and fitting a new set of Camac tyres. The vendor classes the car’s original 850cc and four-speed manual gearbox as ‘excellent’ and is now offering this tidy specimen complete with original buff logbook, handbooks, sales brochure and Haynes manual. The odometer currently stands at a wholly credible 76,371 miles.

With the reverberations of the 1956-1957 Suez Crisis being felt worldwide, Leonard Lord lost little time in commissioning Alec Issigonis to begin work on a radical small car project. Apart from the constraint of using existing BMC mechanical assemblies and a brief to house four adults plus their luggage within as small a space as possible, the brilliant Issigonis was given carte blanche. His response was the now legendary Mini. Featuring an ingenious transverse-mounted powertrain (with engine sat atop the gearbox), all-round independent 'rubber cone' suspension, front-wheel drive and compact rack and pinion steering, the newcomer was a packaging masterpiece; not to mention one of the most influential automotive designs ever conceived. The Austin Mini Countryman and Morris Mini Traveller estate versions were built on a slightly longer platform than the saloons. Unlike that of their big brother, the Morris Minor Traveller, the wood panelling of the Mini estates was decorative rather than structural. Total estate production comprised 108,000 Countrymans and 99,000 Travellers.

In summary:

  • An attractive example complete with original 850cc engine
  • The subject of a degree of recent recommissioning
  • Part of museum display in the Isle of Man for five years
