Registered in November 1968, this early Jaguar XJ6 4.2, which is being offered with no reserve, has remarkably had just one owner from new. Finished in striking burgundy with a brown leather interior, ‘RRY397G’ is described as being in ‘good’ condition throughout, which is borne out by the images. Fresh from its long-term enthusiast ownership, it is described as a much-cherished and highly original example. Indeed, period features abound, from the original number plates, to period motoring club badges including a Jaguar Drivers’ Club grille badge. The speedometer even retains a sticker advising how to reset the trip counter, while the dashboard switches still have their white lettering markings. A modern touch is added by a Kenwood CD player.
The Jaguar XJ was introduced in 1968 to great acclaim. It was extremely well received by media and customers alike, thanks to its delectable luxury sports saloon style, charismatic interior and extremely well-polished driving dynamics. Within two years, it had become Jaguar’s range-topping car, with 2.8-litre and 4.2-litre straight-six engines joined by a 5.3-litre V12 in 1972. There were several versions, including high-end Daimler models featuring air conditioning, and production totalled nearly 100,000 in five years, before the original was upgraded into Series 2 guise. An impeccable Series 3 followed in 1979, and lasted in V12 guise right through to 1992 – despite the 1986 launch of the core XJ6 replacement, known as the XJ40.
