November 2022 Classics Auction

  Lot 42

1971 Ford Escort Mexico with 2.1-litre Cosworth engine
2.1-Litre naturally aspirated Cosworth engine

Registration - HLY 3K

Chassis No. - BFATLY23227

M.O.T. - July 2023

Odometer - 12,591

MKI Mexicos are hot property these days and fetching good money even in standard form. ‘HLY 3K’, however, is anything but standard, as its original 1600cc Kent engine has been supplanted by a normally aspirated Peter Jones Rallying 2.1-litre Cosworth unit that’s fed by a pair of 45 DCOE Weber carburettors. Built to fast road specification over the last 15 years, this relative wolf in sheep’s clothing also boasts a Type 9 five-speed manual gearbox, discs brakes all-round, World Cup cross-member, AVO dampers, limited slip differential, and rides on wide-section Minilite wheels shod with new semi-click tyres. The vendor considers the Cossie powerplant and transmission to be ‘excellent’ and the bodywork, white paintwork and black interior trim to be ‘good’.

The Ford Escort was launched at the 1968 Brussels Motorshow. Acutely aware that the Cortina was in the autumn of its competition career, Ford’s competition department had been developing a race/rally version of the model throughout 1967, and had the Twin-Cam ready to roll at the same time its standard siblings were finding their way onto the public roads. One of the Escort’s most memorable early competition wins, was Hannu Mikkola’s victory on the 1970 London to Mexico World Cup Rally. Never slow to miss a marketing opportunity, Ford used the result to create the now famous special edition Ford Escort Mexico in time for the 1971 season. Built on its own production line at the company’s Advanced Vehicle Operations (AVO) in Aveley, Essex, its specially strengthened shell was fitted with Rallye Sport suspension and brakes and powered by a 1.6-litre ‘Kent’ engine. The model was even given its own dedicated race series – the Mexico Challenge.

In summary:

  • A smartly-presented wolf in sheep’s clothing
  • Converted to fast road specification over the last 15 years
  • Powered by a 2.1-litre non-turbo Cosworth engine
