  Lot 42

1971 Jaguar XJ6 Series 1

Registration No. - JWB 624J

Chassis No. - 1G8743BW

M.O.T. - March 2022

Odometer - 39,750

To the eyes of many an enthusiast, the original XJ6 becomes ever more graceful with age, and it would seem ‘JWB 624J’ is a truly splendid example of the breed, on which over £19,000 has apparently been lavished in the last five years alone. The work involved included: a full respray and the replacement of the automatic transmission, front and rear springs, front and rear brakes and power steering rack, while a stainless steel exhaust system has supplanted the original mild steel one. Then, as recently as last year, the engine was treated to a total rebuild, a labour of love that included a rebore; new pistons, valves and guides, main and big end bearings, timing chain and oil pump; and full refurbishment of the SU carburettors and distributor. The cost involved was in excess of £4,000, since when the venerable XJ has journeyed just 200 miles, bringing the total distance travelled from new to a very modest 39,750. It is perhaps no surprise that the vendor (the Jaguar’s sixth keeper), currently regards the bodywork, paintwork, interior trim, 2.8-litre engine and transmission as all being in ‘excellent’ order and informs us that the rebuilt engine ‘runs cool and with great oil pressure’. He is now offering the car complete twin electric fans, woodrim steering wheel and a collection of invoices dating back 10 years, plus a current MOT valid until March 31 next year.

When launched in 1968, the XJ6 drew high praise from the media, with Motor magazine saying: “The company has produced results we believe every competitor throughout the world, from Rolls-Royce downwards, cannot afford to ignore.”

In summary:

  • An apparently immaculate example in which over £19,000 has been invested in the last 5 years
  • Just 39,750 recorded miles from new
  • Comes with a large collection of invoices and current MOT
