The Gold Cup Classic & Performance Car & Motorcycle Auction

  Lot 42

1972 MGB GT
A credible 56,000 miles from new

Registration - BON 417K

Chassis No. - GHD5273690G

M.O.T. - Exempt

Odometer - 56,676

This tidy GT began life as an export model that was first UK registered in May 1977, since when it has passed through the hands of 20 keepers, the most recent of whom acquired the MG in 2019. He informs us that along the way it has been extensively restored, been treated to a colour change from gold to burgundy, and even starred in an episode of the popular TV programme Bangers & Cash. He says the GT ‘drives really well and is in good condition for its age’, and in summary currently grades the B Series engine, overdrive transmission and black leather interior trim as ‘excellent’ and the bodywork and paintwork as ‘good’. ‘BON 417K’ currently display an unwarranted but wholly credible total mileage of 56,678 and is being sold complete Moto-Lita leather covered steering wheel, Sparkomatic radio cassette player, alloy rocker cover, free-flow air filters and comprehensive history file.

Introduced in May 1962, the monocoque MGB was a welcome progression from the body-on-frame T-Series and MGA models that preceded it. The more modern construction resulted in weight savings, reduced manufacturing costs and notably tauter handling. It was initially only available in roadster form – the Pininfarina-penned hatchback GT derivative with 2+2 seating not being offered until October 1965. The MKII model of 1967 brought an updated manual gearbox with revised ratios and synchromesh on all gears, an improved rear axle, and a switch from dynamo to alternator. In 1969, Rostyle wheels replaced the previous pressed steel versions for standard fit. With the MKIII derivative of 1972 came a new facia and improved heater. However, the biggest visual change in the car’s history occurred two years later, when steel reinforced plastic bumpers replaced the chrome ones and the ride height was raised by one inch. These changes were demanded by the American market, which had accounted for much of the car’s production from day one.

By the time GT production ceased in October 1980, a total of 125,282 had been produced.

In summary

  • A tidy imported example that was first UK registered in 1977
  • Said to have been extensively restored over the years
  • Starred in an episode of Bangers & Cash
